What Is a Solid Liquid Separator Machine?

A Solid Liquid Separator Machine is a mechanically driven separation device designed to process mixed streams where separation of the solid and liquid phases is required for further downstream handling. The machine is composed of four principal assemblies: a feed device, a separator casing incorporating a screw conveyor and cylindrical screen, a compacted solid material outlet module, and one or two separated liquid outlets. A drive unit and structural basement frame complete the machine assembly.

The feed device takes the form of either a feeding hopper or a compensator tank depending on whether the incoming material is conveyed mechanically or pumped into the separator. This flexibility in feed arrangement allows the SLS machine to be integrated into existing process lines regardless of how the upstream material is transported.

The separated solid and liquid phases produced by the machine can each be handled in a simpler and more cost effective manner than the original mixed stream, reducing the burden on downstream storage, transport, and disposal or reuse operations.

How the Solid Liquid Separator Machine Functions

The SLS machine operates on the combined principles of gravity separation and mechanical squeezing to achieve efficient phase separation across a wide range of materials and liquid content levels:

Step 1: Material Feeding

The material to be separated enters the machine through the feeding hopper or compensator tank and is received by the screw conveyor inside the separator casing.

Step 2: Gravity Separation and Liquid Drainage

As the screw conveyor transports the material along its path, the liquid phase begins to separate under gravity and passes outward through the mesh of the cylindrical screen that encloses the screw conveyor. This initial gravity drainage removes the more loosely held liquid from the solid material.

Step 3: Progressive Squeezing and Compaction

As the material advances toward the outlet, the screw conveyor progressively squeezes out the more strongly bonded liquid from the solid phase. By the time the material reaches the compacted solid outlet, a plug of near dry solid material has formed, which is discharged through the outlet diaphragm.

Step 4: Separated Liquid and Solid Discharge

The separated liquid phase exits through one or two liquid outlet ports at the base of the separator casing for collection and downstream processing or disposal. The compacted solid is discharged at the outlet for handling, transport, composting, or further drying.
