High Flow Agitator

A high-flow agitator is used in anaerobic digesters to circulate slurry, cattle dung, food waste, Napier and other organic feedstock. Its main purpose is to maintain uniform mixing so microorganisms can convert organic matter into biogas efficiently.

For a CBG (Compressed Biogas) plant, the main benefit is better digester mixing, reduced sedimentation and scum formation, and more stable biogas production.

Design

High Flow Agitators generates flow by the thrust of lift action of rotating axial vanes of the propeller. The pump has an elbow (Casing) that directs the flow through suction and out the discharge end of the pump. It can be use top or end suction configuration depending upon need and flange dimensions. Bolt circle and hole comply with ANSI B16.5 150#. The back pull-out design allows for easy maintenance and repairs as the rotation elements maybe removed without disturbing the pipe work.

Our high flow agitators are unmatched in the market for high volume and low head pumping needs, particularly in applications involving corrosive and abrasive solutions.

What Is an Agitator?

An agitator is a mechanical device installed inside a process tank or vessel to combine and homogenise different process media. The media handled by agitators span all physical states including liquids, gases, and solids such as salts, powders, and granules. The agitator imparts mechanical energy to the medium by rotating an impeller, which causes the contents of the tank to flow, shear, and mix until a uniform or homogenised state is achieved.

The speed of rotation, measured in revolutions per minute, controls the intensity of agitation and consequently the degree of mixing, shear, and heat transfer within the tank. Agitators are used wherever consistent product quality depends on thorough blending of process components at the required rate and uniformity.

What Is a High Flow Agitator?

High Flow Agitators are a specialised category of agitation equipment engineered for high-volume, low-head mixing applications. The equipment operates by controlling the rotational speed of the impeller to generate the flow and shear conditions required to fully homogenise the tank contents. The media inside the tank are kept moving at a consistent rate and in a defined flow pattern that ensures uniform mixing throughout the vessel volume.

High Flow Agitators from Propeller Pumps generate flow through the push and lift produced by the rotating axial vanes of the propeller. A pump elbow or casing directs the flow through the suction end and discharges it through the outlet end. Depending on the installation requirements and flange dimensions, the equipment can be configured for either top suction or end suction arrangement. The bolt circle and hole dimensions comply with ANSI B16.5 150-pound requirements.

The back pull out design of the rotating assembly allows the spinning components to be removed for maintenance and repair without dismantling the connected pipework, significantly reducing maintenance downtime and the associated operational cost.

Uses of High Flow Agitators

High Flow Agitators are employed wherever the process requires the thorough combination of various process media including liquids, gases, and solid particulates. Typical operational contexts include:

  • Adding chemicals to source water in water treatment operations to bring raw water to drinking water standards
  • Combining pharmaceutical ingredients in batch mixing processes requiring precise blending of active and excipient components
  • Axial pumping applications where directional flow within the tank is required for process efficiency
  • Gas induction mixing where gases need to be dispersed uniformly into a liquid medium.
  • Flocculation in water and wastewater treatment to aggregate fine suspended particles for downstream separation
  • High viscosity product blending where standard low power agitators lack the torque to maintain uniform mixing
  • High shear and low shear mixing depending on impeller design and rotational speed selected for the process
